Parent Involvement

What does the research say?

A synthesis of research on parent involvement over the past decade has found, regardless of family income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to:

  • Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs

  • Be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits

  • Attend school regularly

  • Have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school

  • Graduate and go on to postsecondary education.

How can I start to get involved?

Here at Hanshaw we feel based on research it is important to get involved with your student’s education.  We highly encourage you to be involved with your student’s education.  One easy way to start today is to have conversations with your student on a daily basis.  Simple questions such as:

  • What did you learn today?

  • What challenged you most at school today?

  • What activity in class engaged you the most today?

(Helpful hint:  If they say “I don’t know,” ask them “If you did know what would you say?”)
